Archos shows latest products in their platinum range. The Archos 97 platinum features 2048×1536 IPS screen “exactly the same as in the latest iPad”. The Archos platinum range also has dual band wifi, a Quad Core RK3188 processor clocked at 1.6ghz with 2GB RAM. The Archos Platinum range has a aluminium shells rather than plastic. The 97 platinum will be priced in retail at around $300€. Archos platinum range also comes in 8″ (I think $200€ maybe $150€) and 10.1″ (probably at $250€).
Archos is showing the Archos 101 XS2 the successor to the Archos 101 XS thin 10.1″ tablet with keyboard dock. The Archos 101 XS2 has a 10.1″ 1280×800 “real full IPS” screen. Like the previous generation the 101 XS2 comes with its own keyboard cover, here included at the 250$/€ targetted retail price. Upgrade from last year’s dual-core OMAP4470 Archos 101 XS the XS2 uses a Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 28nm HKMG Rockchip RK3188 CPU with Mali-400 GPU along side 2gb of ram.
Archos launches their new TV Set-top-box system based on the dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP4470 with SGX544 GPU, it features a HD webcam, Ethernet, HDMI output, USB Host, Bluetooth 4.0 low-power support, (probably Miracast support), runs Android 4.1 and everything that also runs on Archos’s latest 101/97 XS Generation 10 series. You can use Archos new Bluetooth 4.0 remote and you can also use any other Bluetooth game controller from Xbox360/PS3/Wii and you can use any Bluetooth or RF/USB Keyboard and mice also for controls. The price is $129.
Archos launches new tablets on the all-new Allwinner A31 processor platform, which is a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor with SGX544 GPU. The price is $199 for 8″ 1024×768 (40% cheaper than iPad Mini), $299 for 9.7″ Retina (40% cheaper than the iPad4).
Craig Terblanche of Archos USA shows us the new Archos Titanium range of tablets based on the dual-core Rockchip RK3066 ARM Cortex-A9 with Mali-400MP4, on Android 4.1, all Google Certified, 8GB Flash and 1GB RAM, IPS screens, aluminum chassis in thin and light form factors, white color, 7″ 1024×600 $119 (40% cheaper than Nexus7 and Kindle Fire HD), 8″ 1024×768 $169 (50% cheaper than iPad Mini), 9.7″ 2048×1536 Retina $249 (50% cheaper than iPad 4), 10.1″ 1280×800 $199 (50% cheaper than Nexus10).
Phil Geldard of Archos shows and talks about the release of the Archos Gamepad on the US market, scheduled to happen in February 2013 at the price of $169 MSRP. Archos has been trying to ramp up mass manufacturing to be able to deliver to supply the huge demand worldwide that there is for this really cool product. The Nintendo games are the best in the world. That is why I’m most excited about playing those on the Archos Gamepad and it’s awesome that most games seem smooth. Although I think the N64 game emulation on Android is still a work in progress. Here I show a bit of Super Mario 64, Wave Race, Wipeout 64, Diddy Kong Racing and also showing that Archos’s button mapping works fine for Angry Birds.
Playing videogames is the top activity that consumers do on tablets. So Archos is releasing this awesome thin, light and very well prices $149 Archos Gamepad. It’s got a 1024×600 capacitive touch screen but more importantly for gaming, it’s got game controller buttons on each side of the screen. This device runs on the Rockchip RK3066 dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor with the quad-core Mali-400MP4 GPU. Thus gameplay support is quite decent, especially considering the $149 retail price of this device. Archos software engineers implement a very innovative mapping software layer solution on top of Android, to map the hardware controls to touch-screen input. Thus a large portion of existing touch-screen optimized games are thus very well playable like this. As a transition until all Android games become fully optimized for normal gamepad input. Not only as portable Android gameplayers come with buttons, but for the Android home consoles, HDMI sticks, Set-top-boxes, Google TV and more, all suggesting that Android is about to become by far the biggest video games platform in the world. In this video, I showcase one N64 emulator that I could find on the Google Play Store, though N64 and Dreamcast emulation is still a work in progress, as many more consumers start getting access to these types of Android gaming devices, hopefully it’ll encourage more game developers to improve emulators and new games support on the platform. There isn’t specifically need for game developers to specifically target the RK3066 and this device, since as I understand a lot of the hardware acceleration happens through standards based Open GL ES 2.0, but for sure as more gamers and developers start using these devices, the optimization level of gaming can reach perfection, or at least a very satisfactory and impressive level at that price.
