Archos 5G subsidized at 149€ with subscription in France with SFR

Posted by Charbax on 23rd January 2009

Update on 27th of March 2009, the price is now subsidized at 99€ by SFR in France when you signup for a 1 or 2 year plan.

SFR, the first telecom in the world to have launched the Archos 5G with HSDPA data subscriptions thus far, is providing the Archos 5G for 149€ with a 2-year 19,90€ per month HSDPA data subscription plan, or at 24,90€ per month 1-year subscription plan. +5€ per month if you are not having your regular mobile phone plan with SFR as well.

Archos will hopefully soon be able to announce the availabillity of the Archos 5G with or without HSDPA subscriptions in other markets around the world. The Archos 5G is Archos most revolutionary product thus far, the first product of its kind which now also has built-in HSDPA connectivity.

DVB-SH Dock and Plugin to be released

Posted by Charbax on 23rd January 2009

Archos announced and demonstrated together with Alcatel Lucent and ICO, one of the worlds first solutions for the DVB-SH reception. It’ll be available as a Dock and a software plugin within the next few months, in those regions that are going to launch the DVB-SH mobile TV broadcasting standard.

The DVB-SH standard mixes HSDPA-like cell phone towers that transmit the DVB-H mobile TV signal in densely populated areas, while EUTELSAT and SES Astra are launching a new satellite that will cover most of Europe with a mobile TV signal in less populated areas. You can watch a video Interview I did with an Alcatel-Lucent representative about the DVB-SH technology at

As we are still waiting for the following promised features in firmware upgrades:

- HD 720p video codecs support through the HD plugin

- HSDPA USB dongle support on USB host of Battery, Mini Dock or DVR Station

- DVB-T Tuner Dock

- FM Remote Control (worldwide release)

- Full in-car GPS Dock support

- USB1 and USB2 keyboard and mouse support with USB hub (already partially working)

So you can hopefully look forward to all these awesome promised features being added in the coming weeks and months to the current Archos 5 and Archos 7 series.

Archos launches Archos 10 Laptop

Posted by Charbax on 14th January 2009

The Archos 10 comes with a 10.2″ LED backlit screen, a 160GB hard drive, 1GB RAM of memory, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, an Intel Atom N270 processor and Microsoft Windows XP.

MSRP suggested retail pricing in Europe is going to be: 349€ for the 3-cell battery option and 379€ for the 6-cell battery version.

MSRP suggested retail pricing in the USA is going to be: $399 for the 3-cell battery option and $449 for the 6-cell battery version.

That positions Archos 10 MSRP at about 50€ or $50 cheaper than the Asus eee 1000h and the Samsung Nc10 which have about the same hardware configurations.

No word yet if there is going to be an Archos 10G version with a built-in HSDPA modem.
